It’s no secret that Michigan beaches are some of the best around. If you are currently planning your photo session and need a little help figuring out the best location, I have you covered! As a Michigan senior photographer, I love working with my clients to plan sessions they’ll treasure for years. Plan Your Dream Portraits At These Wonderful Beaches Near Detroit

Lexington Boardwalk Marina

7400 Huron Street, Lexington, Michigan  48450

Throughout the warmer months, Lexington Boardwalk Marina is the place to be! Located in Lexington, Michigan, this all-but-forgotten beach town is about an hour and a half away from downtown Detroit. I promise, though, this town is worth the drive! The quiet city overlooks Lake Huron and offers a respite from the stress of the rest of the world. Yes, of course you’ll have the water (we’ll talk about that in a sec) but downtown is a place unlike any other. The 19th-century commercial buildings along the main strip offer colorful backdrops for those who wish to add some urban flair to their beach pictures. Share a coffee at the cafe before you head out to the boardwalk to show off the views!

The sailboats near the marina only add to the coastal charm of this city. If you’d like, you can even rent one out and set sail over the water! If you do prefer to stay on land, you can walk alongside the pier or head out to the sandy beaches near Port Crescent State Park. You could honestly spend all day walking around this charming town and find countless backdrops for your photo session!

Lighthouse Beach

Garfield and Omar Sts, Port Huron, Michigan 48060

For those who want a backdrop that feels uniquely Michigan, I just know you are going to adore Lighthouse Beach just outside Detroit. Located in Port Huron, this park gives you over 900 feet of waterfront. While the current makes this beach unsuitable for swimming, the clear water of Lake Huron is going to shine throughout your session. You can walk alongside the sandy shore or take some pictures in the grass. As the sun sets over the water, the grounds seem to completely transform as vivid pinks and purples give way to the night sky.

The beach can often get a little congested, especially on nicer days. If you are looking for the best way to avoid the crowds, I always suggest planning a sunrise session where you can still get the gorgeous skies while only having to worry about a few stray early birds. Throughout your session, I definitely suggest taking advantage of the namesake Fort Gratiot Lighthouse! This was the first lighthouse in the state and gives you a unique backdrop for your photos. The historic woodturning shop just next door also gives you a fabulous background for portraits of all kinds!

Lakeside Beach

3670 Gratiot Ave, Port Huron, Michigan 48060

Located just next door to Lighthouse Beach, you have Lakeside Beach. This Detroit area beach gives you a little more of that sandy, beachy feel than its neighbor. It’s not uncommon to see swimmers making their way out into the water or boats setting sail across the water. There is a sand volleyball court, several pavilions, and a concession stand should you need a little refreshment throughout your session. Just like with Lighthouse Beach, this area can get a little congested on nicer days, but luckily, it’s large enough that you can spread out as much as you need to avoid the crowds.

Throughout your session, you will mostly have the sandy beaches and the clear blue water of Lake Huron as your backdrop. There are a few grassy patches and trees, plus there is a nearby park that you can walk to throughout your time. The beach parking is free for Fort Gratiot, Port Huron, and Port Huron TWP residents, but those who live outside of the limits will have to pay for a single pass. Another thing to keep in mind with this location is that it is not pet-friendly, so if you do want to include your pup in your session, you might need to pick somewhere else.

Sanilac County Lexington Park

3885 Lakeshore Rd, Lexington, Michigan 48450

If you are looking for a Detroit area beach that has a variety of natural backdrops throughout your session, I think Sanilac County Lexington Park might be the spot for you! This park is in Lexington near the Boardwalk but includes up to 27 acres. There is a wooden stairway at the location that takes you directly down to the beach right by the water, so you can capture the lake without worrying about a massive calf workout. The park has a number of flat, grassy lookouts that show off the water while offering a lush backdrop.

You can also find towering trees, quiet walkways, and a picturesque wooden bridge running through the forest. What I love most about this location is how much it shines through practically any season. While the summer sun is fabulous, the trees change to vivid colors throughout the fall, offering colorful foliage alongside the water. Truly, I don’t know if it’s possible to catch this location on a bad day!

The park features a campground and has become a favorite for outdoorsmen in the area. While you are there, you can rent out a canoe and get some one-of-a-kind pictures out on the water. Additionally, this park is pup-friendly in case you want to incorporate your favorite four-legged friend!
