Your senior pictures are a special occasion. You have worked so hard for years now, and it’s finally time to think about what comes next. But before you head off, it’s time to celebrate this moment. Your senior pics give you the chance to tell the story of who you’ve become and where you are going. And while there are a lot of things you want to consider while you are planning your session, one of the biggest factors will be the location. So why not make it truly special with some wildflower fields in Michigan?

As a Michigan senior photographer, I love working with my clients to find the perfect spots for their portraits. From vibrant cities to quiet high schools, I’ve been all across the state. While all these locations are fabulous for your portraits, wildflower fields remain my favorite option! Not only are they sunny and lush, but they also give you a great way to incorporate natural color into your session. It’s the ideal way to stand out and create portraits you’ll treasure for years to come!

If you do decide that you want a wildflower session, there are a few things to keep in mind. First of all, your timeline will be completely reliant on nature. With these portraits, it’s best to constantly be thinking ahead. Most wildflower sessions take place in the summer between junior and senior year, and these months are already busy for most photographers. Start making your plans right away so you can guarantee a spot on your photographer’s books!

Secondly, you will want to think a lot about what you want to wear. You want to look stylish while still being comfortable enough to navigate uneven ground. Opt for shoes that are ready to take on the adventure. Finally, you’ll want to find a farm ahead of time and learn their schedule. Flowers constantly bloom from spring through late summer, and a farm’s availability will be completely dependent on the variety they use. Normally, they have this information directly on their website, so you can be ready ahead of time!

Now that we have all that out of the way, I would love to tell you all about the best wildflower fields in Michigan for your senior pictures!

Ankley Family Farm is an original through and through! This family farm got their start in 1902, raising dairy cows they milked by lantern light. As you might have imagined, the property had evolved quite a bit since then! They have expanded far beyond cattle and now offer alfalfa, corn, soybeans, wheat, and flowers. Spread over nearly 700 acres, there’s a lot at this location to love!

The wildflower fields are a huge attraction for people all across Michigan. The flowers start to blossom around the middle of June, and their summer season typically kicks off around July 15th, with hours from Tuesday through Sunday. They are incredibly mindful of photographers and clients. Ankley Family Farm also has a photography trail where visitors are prohibited from picking any of the blooms to ensure you have a lush backdrop. They welcome portable personal props, and they allow dogs on the sunflower and wildflower trails.

When it comes to price, they are pretty affordable. They just require that everyone on the trail pays the price of admission. If you do want to hold flowers for your pictures, you can purchase an additional U-Cut flower jar with blossoms you’ll get yourself from the cutting fields. You do not need a reservation, which means you won’t have exclusive access to the farms. Throughout the evenings, there are normally multiple photographers present because the views are just that good! You can also follow their IG/Facebook for field conditions ahead of time.

Temecula Farms has been blazing a new trail since they first broke ground in 2021. The couple behind the property started this space as a passion project after spending a few years bouncing across the country. Today, you will find acres of pristine land complete with hens, an adorable Great Pyrenees, and zinnias as far as the eye can see.

At Temecula Farms, they use natural conditions to grow their crops and wildflowers, giving you an unobstructed backdrop for your Michigan senior portraits. Their growing season kicks off around April and lasts all the way through September. During this time, they welcome photographers to stop by and hold sessions on their grounds. To get started, you will first fill out an inquiry form through their website and explain that you’d like to reserve the property for your session. From there, you can set up a date and a time. For your session, you’ll have zinnias, sunflowers, and open farmlands for a dreamy backdrop!

If purple is more your shade, you might love Indigo Lavender Farms. This Michigan lavender farm features rolling hills of lush lavender and wildflower fields that will make you feel as though you’re in the midst of France. Their lavender plants bloom from early July and stay vibrant for about a month. This has quickly become a popular spot for every type of photo session, and as a result, they know how to make the planning process exceptionally easy.

You will have a timed reservation, and you will pay for your appointment time. Because they are so strict about this, it tends to be a pretty efficient and easy process. If the weather decides not to cooperate, they’ll work with you to rearrange your time so you don’t have to miss out on the season. They will also allow pets if you work it out with them ahead of time. One thing to note: this farm does not offer changing rooms, so you will be limited to one outfit during your time at the farm.
